All inqueries will be responded to no later than by the end of the next "in-office" day.
The Assessing Department's primary function is to assess all real and personal property each year. The Department administers the property tax system in accordance with all statutory rules and regualtions. All assessment records for residential, commercial and industrial properties within the City are maintained by the Assessing Department.

Letters of appeal must be received by noon March 11, 2025
Appointments to appeal in person may be scheduled by calling the Assessing Officce on Mondays at 734-252-4314 between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm by March 4, 2025.

Property Taxes

The Treasurer is responsible for the collection and distribution of all property taxes paid by City of Belleville residents and businesses.
- Property taxes are based on the taxable value of your property multiplied by the millage rates levied by various taxing units (state, school, county and city)
- To estimate your annual property taxes, use our property tax tables (see downloads in the box)
- Summer property tax statements will include the school tax plus 100% of the Wayne County operating millage allowed by state law. Summer taxes are payable without interest if received by August 31st
- Winter property tax statements will include county taxes and the city's local taxes. Winter taxes are payable without interest if received by February 14th
The Treasurer's office works in conjunction with mortgage companies to ensure that your taxes are paid on time. Please notify us in writing of mortgage company changes you may make during the year (see contact information in box).
Delinquent Taxes
On March 1st, delinquent real property taxes are turned over to the Wayne County Treasurer, who will add a 4% penalty fee plus 1% interest per month. Payments made after that date are sent to:

Special Payment Deferments
Senior citizens age 62 or older, and paraplegics, eligible veterans, widows and blind persons may defer payment of the summer tax bill for their primary residence to February, without interest or penalty. An application must be filed annually by September 15th with the City Treasurer to be eligible for this deferment. For an application, see Quick Links on this page.
